Varnishing Finish

Varnishing can be applied to paper packaging to provide a glossy finish. It is applied by brushing, spraying, or roller-coating a thin layer of varnish on the surface of the paper. The varnish can be either a water-based or a solvent-based material. Varnishing can enhance the appearance of paper packaging, making it look more attractive and professional. It also provides protection against moisture and other environmental factors, which can help extend the life of the packaging.

Step by Step Varnishing Process

  • Preparing the Surface – The surface of the paper packaging is prepared by ensuring that it is clean, dry, & free from dust or debris.
  •  Varnish applying – It can be done using a roller or spray. Evenly spread across the surface to make sure that it covers the entire area. You can choose whether a glossy or matte finish results.
  • Drying – Once the varnish is applied, it needs to dry completely. This can take several hours, depending on the type of varnish used & the environmental conditions.
  • Curing – If the varnish is dry, it may need to be cured to ensure that it hardens & adheres properly to the surface. This can be done using heat, air drying, or UV light, depending on the specific varnish utilized.
  • Inspecting the Packaging – After the complete curing, the paper packaging is inspected. Any defects or imperfections can be corrected at this stage.

Varnishing Types

Glossy Varnishing

Deliver a glossy, shiny finish. The coating is achieved from a combination of oils, resins, and waxes. They are applied to the paper using a machine that applies heat to the coating.

Matte Varnishing

Gives a dull packaging finish. Typically used to give printed materials a smooth, professional look while also providing a protective layer. The varnish can be used in a dry form, such as powder, or as a liquid.

Spot UV Varnishing

Involves applying the varnish to particular areas of the paper packaging. It uses a printing plate. Spot coating can be used to create a glossy or matte effect on specific parts of the packaging, such as logos or images.

UV Varnishing

Involves curing the varnish using ultraviolet (UV) light. This provides a hard, scratch-resistant finish. UV varnishing is often used for high-quality packaging materials that require extra durability and protection.

All-over UV Varnishing

This method involves applying the varnish to the entire surface of the paper packaging using a roller or spray. Flood coating creates a consistent finish and provides complete protection to the packaging material.

Silk or Satin Varnishing

This process involves the application of a glossy coating to the paper that gives it a soft, silky feel and appearance. The coating acts as a barrier against water, dirt, oils, and other environmental contaminants, as well as giving the paper a more attractive appearance.
